I have read hundreds of blogs on
blogging - and there is one universal truth - there are no common rules! If you don’t have rules, you will have chaos - sooner or later.
Many of the blogs give you an idea of why you should blog, how you can blog, how you can stand out to be heard, and some insight into how you should act, but no one are the same.
In fact, one of the most interesting rule I read was in a post on the blog
Via Negativa, and his "
9 rules for blogging", which was
"1) Whatever you do, don’t bore yourself. For example, by blogging about blogging". Interesting, since that was just what he was doing... I disagree with him on this point, and especially him making it rule number one.
"Instead of listening to those who
actually provide substantial
original content, we will be forced
to listen to the bullies who know
the dirty tricks."
The Silence of the LambsMy reason for this is simple, and I believe, unavoidable. Soon, there will be more than 100 million blogs in the Digital Media sphere. Everybody cheers, and the public voice is heard! That sounds great!
Sadly not! In fact this will only silence the public voice who tries to promote themselves and their great ideas and insight. As I said in the beginning; if you don’t have rules, you will have chaos!
How can your voice be heard in such a crowd? Have you ever been to a party and tried to talk to someone across the room. Impossible! The same will happen online. Too many voices stating the same statements, posting the same ideas, commenting on the comments of comments, elbowing their way to the podium. In stead of listening to those who actually provide substantial original content, we will be forced to listen to the bullies who know the dirty tricks.
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes…David Bowie has a point - Turn and face the strain. If we don’t slow down and make our own rules, the point of blogging will kill itself. That’s why I have tried to take the best of the hundreds of blogs I have read about blogging, and made my (highly subjective) “12 common rules”, in the hope that blogs will have its right place in the future:
1. Tell the truth, stay on topic and be diplomatic – don’t report on gossip and rumors
2. Write deliberately and with accuracy – don’t offend your audience
3. Blog for value or don’t blog at all
4. Disagree with other opinions respectfully
5. Acknowledge and correct mistakes promptly
6. Never delete a post. Preserve the original – maintain your publishing integrity
7. Don’t delete comments unless they are spam or off-topic. Reply to emails
and comments when appropriate, and do so promptly
8. Strive for high quality with every post – including basic grammar and spellchecking
9. Link to online references and original source materials directly – always!
10. Disclose conflicts of interest
11. Keep private issues and topics private
12. Have fun and be passionate about what you do
