Happy Birthday Albert!

Albert Einstein would have been 128 years old today. Congratulations!

Probably one of the greatest contributors to the world of physics who have ever lived, and probably the maddest scientist in history.

What a man. Today's phrase must be: E=mc²

The Future of Blogging = The Silence of the Lambs?

I have read hundreds of blogs on blogging - and there is one universal truth - there are no common rules! If you don’t have rules, you will have chaos - sooner or later.

Many of the blogs give you an idea of why you should blog, how you can blog, how you can stand out to be heard, and some insight into how you should act, but no one are the same.

In fact, one of the most interesting rule I read was in a post on the blog Via Negativa, and his "9 rules for blogging", which was "1) Whatever you do, don’t bore yourself. For example, by blogging about blogging". Interesting, since that was just what he was doing... I disagree with him on this point, and especially him making it rule number one.

"Instead of listening to those who
actually provide substantial
original content, we will be forced
to listen to the bullies who know
the dirty tricks."

The Silence of the Lambs
My reason for this is simple, and I believe, unavoidable. Soon, there will be more than 100 million blogs in the Digital Media sphere. Everybody cheers, and the public voice is heard! That sounds great!

Sadly not! In fact this will only silence the public voice who tries to promote themselves and their great ideas and insight. As I said in the beginning; if you don’t have rules, you will have chaos!

How can your voice be heard in such a crowd? Have you ever been to a party and tried to talk to someone across the room. Impossible! The same will happen online. Too many voices stating the same statements, posting the same ideas, commenting on the comments of comments, elbowing their way to the podium. In stead of listening to those who actually provide substantial original content, we will be forced to listen to the bullies who know the dirty tricks.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes…
David Bowie has a point - Turn and face the strain. If we don’t slow down and make our own rules, the point of blogging will kill itself. That’s why I have tried to take the best of the hundreds of blogs I have read about blogging, and made my (highly subjective) “12 common rules”, in the hope that blogs will have its right place in the future:

1. Tell the truth, stay on topic and be diplomatic – don’t report on gossip and rumors
2. Write deliberately and with accuracy – don’t offend your audience
3. Blog for value or don’t blog at all
4. Disagree with other opinions respectfully
5. Acknowledge and correct mistakes promptly
6. Never delete a post. Preserve the original – maintain your publishing integrity
7. Don’t delete comments unless they are spam or off-topic. Reply to emails
and comments when appropriate, and do so promptly
8. Strive for high quality with every post – including basic grammar and spellchecking
9. Link to online references and original source materials directly – always!
10. Disclose conflicts of interest
11. Keep private issues and topics private
12. Have fun and be passionate about what you do

Web 2.0 in under 5 minutes

This is probably the best introduction I have seen into the wonderful world of the Digital Media sphere.

Enjoy!

Gerd-Liv Valla at her best!

Today’s post has to be on the subject of the former Norwegian labor union (LO) leader Gerd-Liv Valla and her infamous handling of the Valla/Yssen issue, which inevitably lead to her most “humble” public dismissal.

See the video here (in Norwegian)

My comment on the case, as a PR professional, is not needed. My grandmother can see that this wasn't handled in a very professional way. I only want to share with you one of my favorite poems by Norwegian poet/writer André Bjerke, which is based on an old folk tale.

It is called; "Kjerringa mot strømmen" (the lady against the current) and pretty much sums up Mrs. Valla. Unfortunately it is impossible to translate this poem: But the main point of the story is that the lady in the poem is so stubborn and always disagrees with her husband, so even when her husband was fed up and finally killed her and threw her in the river - she drifted upstream…

But for you Norwegian readers, enjoy!

KJERRINGA MOT STRØMMEN
Av André Bjerke.

I denne tid da frihet aktes lite,

fått evig plass i folkepoesien.

Og sjelden var en dame som fikk plass i
et eventyr, så eventyrlig trassig!
Hun lot seg ikke engang overmanne
da hun ble holdt med hodet under vannet.

Da var det bare stemmen vannet kvalte.
For hun stakk hånden opp. Og hånden talte!
To fingre dannet klippende en saks.
Så drev hun opp mot strømmen som en laks.

Og over fossen lå hun samme aften
i suveren protest mot tyngdekraften.
Hun holdt på sitt. Hun var den bedre del
av det vi kaller Norges folkesjel.

Hun er vår adel, hun er frihetsdrømmen
hvis norske navn er: Kjerringa mot strømmen.

My first blog post ever

Everything changes, and thank god, so do I.

Finally I got the time, enthusiasm and all the right reasons to enter this massive and great world of individualists. In this blog I will try to explore the best ways of entering the digital media sphere, how to think digital, how to be a part of the conversation, how to exploit the posibilities that companies have to build their brand, PR and Marketing in the new era etc...

Greatfully, there is no reason to reinvent the wheel, so I will try to skim through the most interresting articles, blogs, communities, events and networks on PR, marketing, Digital Media Relations and technology trends to educate myself, and hopefully pass on usefull insights.

Welcome to the world's blog number 60.016.873
